Interview with Ingrid Geertsema: Vegan Travel in South Africa

Ingrid Geertsema is an accredited HCA Health and CNS Plant-Based Nutrition Coach, a vegan travel agent, a Vegan Hospitality Consultant and founder of Ubuntu Vegan Hospitality. Originally from the Netherlands, Ingrid moved to South Africa in 2000, bringing with her a passion for sustainable tourism and hospitality. As the Coordinator/Liaison for the Plant-Based Treaty in South Africa, she has combined her expertise in inbound travel with her dedication to veganism. Recently, she launched the first Vegan Adventure Self-Drive Itinerary for 2025, offering a unique, eco-conscious way to explore the beauty of South Africa.

Q: What makes South Africa a good vegan destination?

Ingrid: South Africa is incredibly diverse – we have stunning coastlines, winelands, beaches, deserts, forests, mountains, and of course, an extraordinary variety of wildlife. This diversity is a big reason people often fall in love with South Africa. From major cities to quiet nature retreats, vegan travelers can enjoy the same experiences as any other traveler, with growing vegan options throughout the country.

South Africa's hospitality industry has become much more vegan-friendly in recent years, with an increasing number of accommodations, eateries, and experiences catering to vegan and eco-conscious travelers. Now, vegans can fully immerse themselves in South Africa’s incredible landscapes and rich culture while enjoying plant-based cuisine and cruelty-free amenities. Our “Rainbow Nation” is quickly becoming a destination for those who care about sustainability and ethical travel.

Q: Can you explain what a self-drive tour is and why it’s a popular choice?

Ingrid: A self-drive tour allows travelers to explore a country independently by car. In South Africa, it’s particularly popular because it combines freedom with a structured itinerary. You’re in control of your journey but guided enough to ensure you don’t miss the highlights. The roads, especially in the Western Cape, are generally well-maintained, signposted, and scenic, making self-driving both enjoyable and safe.

Self-drive also aligns well with sustainable travel because it allows you to choose vegan and eco-friendly options along the way. You can make stops at vegan lodges, local vegan-friendly restaurants, and sanctuaries, all at your own pace. In the 15 years I’ve worked in tourism, I’ve never had a client encounter issues with safety during a self-drive.

Q: Why is now a good time for vegan travelers to visit South Africa?

Ingrid: There are so many exciting developments for vegan travelers! Safari lodges, once known only for their traditional dining options, are increasingly accommodating vegan guests. Some even offer vegan wine, cruelty-free toiletries, and vegan cuisine. There’s also a fully plant-based camp opening soon in Kruger National Park, which is a huge step forward.

South Africa is also home to several vegan nature lodges and animal sanctuaries, many of which rely on support from visitors. Staying at these places not only provides a unique experience but also directly supports initiatives that protect animals and promote plant-based living. Vegan travelers can feel good about knowing they’re contributing to local communities and causes by choosing these options.

Q: What are some practical tips for vegan travelers coming to South Africa?

Ingrid: Here are a few tips for anyone planning a vegan trip to South Africa:

  • Stay in Vegan-Friendly Accommodations: Many places are becoming more vegan-aware, especially in the big cities and popular tourist areas. Opt for places certified by Vegan Hospitality or those with clear vegan credentials.

  • Support Local Animal Sanctuaries: South Africa has amazing sanctuaries that need support. Visiting these not only adds meaning to your trip but also helps animals in need.

  • Be Prepared in Remote Areas: While vegan options are increasing, they may still be limited in some rural areas. I recommend stocking up on essentials like plant-based snacks before venturing out.

  • Enjoy the Local Cuisine: South Africa’s produce is exceptional, and there are many plant-based dishes that incorporate local ingredients like sweet potatoes, maize, and various indigenous fruits.
