Bali’s Booming Vegan Scene

This article was written by Hayley Cooper, co-founder of Vegan Hospitality, on her recent trip to Bali.

As I write this, I’m sitting in a fully vegan restaurant, sipping fresh coconut water as a tropical storm rolls in outside. I’m in Bali—a place that has captured my heart and feels like a second home. While my initial trip here was partly inspired by Eat, Pray, Love, what truly drew me in was Bali’s thriving vegan scene, which I had discovered through YouTube and travel blogs. From my first visit to today, I continue to be amazed at just how effortlessly vegan-friendly this island is.

Beyond its collection of world-class 100% vegan restaurants, what truly sets Bali apart is the fact that every restaurant, from high-end eateries to humble roadside warungs, offers vegan options. This level of accessibility is rare, and it’s no accident. Businesses here understand that catering to the growing demand for plant-based dining is not just a moral or environmental choice, but a smart business move. And it’s paying off.

Why Bali’s Plant-Based Restaurants Are Always Packed

One of the most fascinating things about Bali’s vegan scene is just how busy these fully plant-based restaurants are. They’re constantly buzzing with a mix of travelers and locals—not just ethical vegans, but flexitarians, health-conscious diners, and food lovers simply seeking an incredible meal. In places like Ubud, where the culture is deeply rooted in holistic health and spiritual healing, plant-based dining is naturally aligned with the ethos of the community.

This is a wake-up call for hotels around the world: Are you keeping up with this shift in dining preferences? Guests are increasingly expecting high-quality vegan options, and the businesses that embrace this demand are reaping the benefits.

Our First Certified Vegan-Friendly Hotel in Bali: Serenity Eco Guesthouse & Yoga

Bali’s reputation as a wellness destination makes it the perfect place for a hotel to stand out with a strong sustainability commitment. That’s why we’re thrilled to announce that Serenity Eco Guesthouse & Yoga is now officially certified by Vegan Hospitality!

This eco-conscious retreat in Canggu offers a stunning, serene getaway just minutes from the beach, with plant-based hospitality at every level:

  • Alkaline Restaurant: Their 100% vegan restaurant offers everything from nourishing detox juices and smoothies to hearty burgers, curries, and traditional Balinese dishes. Most ingredients are sourced within a 50km radius, and their permaculture garden supplies fresh produce for many of their meals (yes, they offer tours!).

  • Eco-Friendly Accommodations: Sustainability is at the core of their mission, from water filtration systems to energy-efficient practices and waste reduction initiatives.

  • Holistic Wellness: With a variety of yoga classes, wellness workshops, and a focus on mind-body harmony, Serenity truly embodies a full-circle approach to sustainable hospitality.

By becoming certified, Serenity Eco Guesthouse & Yoga now holds the Vegan Hospitality Certification Seal, which not only signals to travelers that they are a trusted plant-based destination but also grants them access to our exclusive vegan guest services training for their staff.

Why Hotels Should Take Note

Serenity Eco Guesthouse & Yoga is ahead of the curve in attracting the growing market of eco-conscious, plant-based travelers. With more tourists seeking hotels that align with their values, properties that prioritize vegan options win both in reputation and revenue.

Hotels that fail to adapt risk missing out on a lucrative and loyal customer base. If your hotel doesn’t yet have a clear vegan strategy, it’s time to ask: Are we missing an opportunity?
